Fatty acid polyunsaturated Omega 3's
Did you know that Omega-3’s are part of the family of polyunsaturated fatty acids?
Omega 3’s are considered essential because the body is unable to produce them on its own and it absolutely needs them to function. This is why they must be obtained from food or substitutes to meet our needs. These Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are involved in several important processes: the constitution in the cell and inner membrane structure, the proper functioning of the cardiovascular, cerebral, hormonal and inflammatory systems.
Omega 3’s provide several benefits:
1. Omega 3’s help to strengthen the functioning of the heart and to prevent heart attacks.
2. Omega 3’s reduce the risk of cardiovascular ailments by 50%. They play an important role in the blood-clotting mechanism by preventing the formation of clots that can block blood vessels.
3. They reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood.
4. Omega 3’s may play a role in the prevention of certain types of cancer.
5. Omega 3’s may have anti-stress and anti-depression properties.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has published appropriate intakes of polyunsaturated fatty acids for different age groups. The report recommended a daily amount of 1.6 g per day for adult men and 1.1 g per day for adult women.
